The Services SETA has opened applications for discretionary grant funding and is calling on research experts to help shape the future of skills development in South Africa.
The organization issued a call for applications: Research expression of interest this week, targeting a major study on the economic profile of the services sector.
The project has two key objectives. First, it will develop a comprehensive economic profile of services sector industries, ranging from hospitality and personal care to finance, business services, and transport. Second, it will review the clustering of economic activities within the sector.
The findings are expected to support operational efficiencies and crucially, guide skills planning across the country.
Services SETA is inviting applications from a wide range of eligible entities. These include private research providers, public higher education institutions, employer associations, professional bodies, and research consortia. Applicants must demonstrate the required research capacity, legal standing, and relevant experience to undertake the work.
The application window is tight. Submissions opened on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, at 08:00 and will close on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at 16:00. Services SETA has stressed that late applications will not be considered, urging interested parties to prepare and submit their applications early.
The services sector is one of South Africa’s largest employers. By understanding how industries cluster and where economic activity is concentrated, the SETA aims to align training and qualifications with real-world demand. This research will help inform how public funds are used to train workers and support job creation.
