Why so many Youth are struggling to find jobs

Youth unemployment remains a major challenge for many young people searching for work. Many face difficulties even before applying for jobs.

One of the main issues is the lack of knowledge on how to effectively use job platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed, which are commonly used for job applications.

Many young people also struggle with online application processes, especially when receiving confusing WhatsApp job links. This often results in missed opportunities due to limited digital skills and lack of guidance.

However, opportunities such as learnerships and internships provide helpful solutions. Learnerships combine classroom learning with practical workplace experience, allowing young people to gain
qualifications while developing practical job skills.

Internships offer short-term workplace exposure that
helps youth understand employer expectations and gain experience for future employment.

These programmes improve employability by giving young people real work experience, making them more competitive in the job market.

Many institutions, including TVET colleges and government-
supported initiatives, have introduced new programmes aimed at helping youth develop skills that align
with current job market demands.

These initiatives are beneficial because they help bridge the gap between education and employment
while exposing young people to different industries. They also help youth build networks, improve confidence, and increase their chances of securing long-term employment.

Despite ongoing challenges, opportunities such as learnerships, internships, and skills development
programmes continue to play an important role in guiding West Rand youth toward better career paths.

Young people are encouraged to research available programmes offered by institutions and colleges across Gauteng.

Institutions such as South West Gauteng TVET College have already opened applications for the 2027 academic intake, offering programmes that can help youth gain qualifications
and workplace exposure.

Skills development organisations such as Sparrow Schools Educational Trust ( https://sparrowschools.co.za ) also continue to provide opportunities aimed at empowering young people with practical skills and career development.
