A Job Should Never Take a Young Person’s Life: People Want Justice After Employee’s Death

The National Youth Unemployment Movement (NYUM) is calling for a full investigation into the death of Gcina Dhladhla, a Cartrack employee whose passing has sparked concerns about workplace health and safety in South Africa.

According to reports, Dhladhla had informed her employer that she was not feeling well and wanted medical attention.

Allegations surrounding how her illness was handled have led to widespread public debate about employee welfare and workplace conditions. However, Cartrack has denied claims that she was prevented from leaving work and says it provided emergency assistance when she became ill. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

On 7 June 2026, NYUM expressed its sadness over Dhladhla’s death and extended its condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. The organization stated that if the allegations surrounding the incident are confirmed, serious questions would need to be answered regarding workplace health and safety practices.

NYUM believes that no worker should ever have to choose between their health and their job. The organisation says workplaces should provide safe environments where employees can seek medical assistance when necessary, without fear of losing income or employment.

The movement has called on Cartrack to cooperate fully with an independent investigation. It has also urged the Department of Employment and Labour and the Compensation Fund to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that workplace safety regulations are upheld.

In addition, NYUM believes that those affected by the tragedy, including Dhladhla’s family, friends, and colleagues, should receive appropriate support and counselling.

The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of workers, particularly young people who often face significant challenges in securing employment. NYUM says every job should provide a safe working environment and respect workers’ fundamental human rights.

While investigations continue, many South Africans are demanding answers and accountability through the hashtag #JusticeForGcina. Supporters say they want to ensure that lessons are learned and that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.

NYUM has vowed to continue advocating for justice and for stronger protections for workers in South Africa.
